What the heck is an infopreneur? Sounds like one of those corporate buzzwords, doesn’t it?
Well, in short, an infopreneur is defined as someone who, through one of many platforms, sells his or her expertise.
Sounds pretty easy, right? An infopreneur is an expert who makes money selling information products.
So how can you sell that knowledge – that expertise – and create a full-time income? Here’s what you need to do.
Find Your Niche
I’ve said it before, and you’ve read it before….
...finding your niche is the single-most important thing you need to do to become an infopreneur.
Your niche could be your industry of employment. Continuing care facilities have a niche, as do airlines or even the restaurant industry.
But your niche doesn’t have to be your primary area of expertise. It could simply be one of your interests.
Think about what you do for fun. Are you interested in permaculture? Sewing? Model airplanes?
Choose something, and think about how you became interested in it. What would others like to know about the topic?
Jot down a few ideas. Now it’s time to start your blog.
Give Away Your Knowledge for Free
Yep. In order to make money, you’re going to give away a lot of information for free.
Infopreneurs need to build the trust of others before they start selling an info product.
And to do that, you need to prove you’re really an expert in your field.
Begin by starting a blog.
Your blog should look professional, but doesn’t have to be expensive. What matters most is that your information is accurate and well-written.
Your blog should contain a few basics about you. Create an ‘About Page’, which tells readers why they should trust you.
Commit to contributing to your blog on a regular basis. Create engaging and interesting content, which shows you know your stuff, but is still easy for readers to understand.
Writing at a 6th or 7th grade reading level is ideal.
Shocking, isn’t it?
Readability is a big part of your content. You want readers to digest your information easily.
One of my mentors, Jim Rohn, always said, “It’s better to express than impress!”
It’s better to express than impress!
Build Your Community
You’re committing a lot of time to your blog, but how can you be sure anyone will read it?
By building a community.
You’re probably already familiar with the easiest ways to do this: social media.
If you use social media, there’s one thing to remember.
Social media is social.
Businesses, which use social media as a marketing tool to advertise and hard sell, are more likely to get “unfollowed.”
Instead, use social media as a way to engage with your readers.
Keep a professional tone, but chat with them about current events or your favorite television shows. Don’t be afraid to show your personal side.
As you engage they’ll begin to see you as a person, not just as another website owner.
Build Your Mailing List
As you add content to your site you’ll get more visitors. Maybe you had 10 visitors per day in the first month. The second month that number might jump to 100 and so on.
The problem is, you won’t know these visitors.
How do you get to know them?
By collecting their email address – but how?
If you want anything out of life you have to ask, don’t you?
It’s no different with collecting email addresses.
Offer something in exchange for their email like a whitepaper, an e-book, a video or access to an exclusive article; anything perceived valuable.
As you grow your email list you’re on your way to becoming an infopreneur. All that’s left is making money!
Become an Infopreneur
You’ve got a good, informative website. You have a community of followers who trust your expertise. And you’ve collected their email addresses.
How do you start to make money? You develop a product to sell.
Some infopreneurs sell books. Others sell courses. All infopreneurs sell knowledge.
An infopreneur has convinced others that he is an expert in his field. He has also convinced others that they, too, can become experts.
Selling an info product is the easiest way to profit from your blog.
So what product should you sell?
You may choose to offer an online course, or sell a video series or sell coaching.
Whatever you decide, what’s most important is that your info product is scalable.
Let’s look at what that means.
Choosing an Information Product
Let’s say, for example, that you’ve become an expert in the field of hotel marketing.
First, you’ll build your website, giving hotel owners and management valuable information about how to use marketing strategies to promote their hotels.
Then, you’ll engage with hotel owners to determine where the need for information lies. You’ll also make a few social contacts.
Next, you’ll begin to monetize your practice. You have two options.
1. You could sell consulting services, offering to visit the hotels on site and offer your expertise for a fee.
2. You could create an online course which teaches hotel owners everything they need to know about your niche.
Which makes more sense?
While it might sound fun to travel to hotels across the world, you’re eventually going to run out of hours in the day.
This will severely limit your income.
Instead of visiting 100 hotels each year, why not create a course which you sell to 100 hotels per month? Per week?
This is a business model that can scale up, and offers unlimited income potential.
Selling Your Expertise
Becoming an infopreneur is defined as selling your expertise to those who wish to learn your skills.
But it takes hard work and quite a bit of planning.
Your website becomes your business, and, as with any business, it’s going to require ongoing commitment.
You’ll soon realize - that commitment pays off.
